The United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) took a decision to assign an observer status to the Arbitration Association together with the right to participate in the UNCITRAL Working Group II (Dispute Resolution) UNICITRAL. The Commission is convened twice a year, the spring session takes place in New York, the autumn session takes place in Vienna. The next UNCITRAL session will be held in Vienna from 11th to 15th September 2017.

UNCITRAL is a leading international organization in terms of which the key international legal documents in the sphere of dispute resolution are being developed. The Working Group II was developing such documents as the Vienna Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods Act (1980), UNCITRAL Model Law on International Commercial Arbitration, UNCITRAL Model Rules of Arbitration. The Working Group is currently working on a document governing international commercial mediation procedure and the enforcement of international commercial settlement agreements reached in the course of the mediation procedure.

Observer organizations are entitled, at the invitation of the Chairman of the session, to present their stand on a particular issue, which is constituted as the subject of the Commission's deliberations. A noteworthy detail is that the observer organizations are not involved in the adoption of UNCITRAL decisions.

Currently, the observer organizations include American Arbitration Association/International Centre for Dispute Resolutions (AAA/ICDR), the American Society of International Law (ASIL), the Law Association for Asia and the Pacific (LAWASIA), the Belgian Centre for Arbitration and Mediation (CEPANI), Vienna International Arbitral Centre (VIAC), Arbitrators and Mediators Institute of New Zealand (AMINZ), European Law Institute (ELI), The China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC), Korean Commercial Arbitration Board (KCAB), Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb), the Mardrid Arbitration Court (MAC), International Academy of Mediators (IAM),  International Insolvency Institute (III), International Mediation Institute (IMI), International Council for Commercial Arbitration (ICCA), International Union of Judicial Officers (UIHJ), Miami International Arbitration Society (MIAS), Energy Community Secretariat, School of International Arbitration - Queen Mary University of London, Financing Fund (PRIME) and others. The assumption of an observer status obliges the Arbitration Association to comply with the highest standards laid down by the Charter of the United Nations Organization. I am sure that the members of the RAA will take a unique opportunity to participate in the work of UNCITRAL on the delegation of the RAA," comments on news the Secretary-General of the RAA Roman Zykov.

UNCITRAL is the main judicial body of the United Nations system in the field of international trade law. The judicial body with the universal membership, which has been specializing in commercial trade law reforms world-wide for more than 40 years. The subject matter of UNCITRAL work is modernization and harmonization of international commercial activities.
